Building Community in the Quiet: Using Silence to Promote Belonging in the Classroom is the third of three workshops in the Fostering Student Wellness and Belonging Workshop Series. This workshop encourages instructors to consider the place of no-stakes silence in encouraging student critical thinking and well-being in the classroom. In Teaching Critical Thinking: Practical Wisdom, bell hooks writes, “we teachers must always be willing to acknowledge our power in the classroom. We should not engage false notions that all our voices carry equal weight.” Teachers’ voices carry more weight in our classrooms. Currently, this power dynamic is deeply embedded in our educational system. However, this section of the workshop aims to disrupt the teacher’s power in the classroom and provide space for critical thinking in the hopes of creating community through silence. Instructors will also be encouraged to affirm self-soothing behaviors, such as stimming or using headphones, during the silent reflections in the classroom as a practice of well-being and belonging.
