Mary Erickson, an alumnus of NC State's College of Humanities and Social Sciences, earned a Bachelor of Arts in anthropology and minors in history and international studies. Erickson works for the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences as an Ichthyology Unit technician. Ichthyology is a branch of zoology that deals with fishes.

Erickson works in Research and Collections, which does everything from databasing, labeling and shelving specimens to sending and receiving loans, sewing labels onto specimens, supervising volunteers and interns, ethanol checks and everything in-between. Erickson helps care for everything from 13-foot thresher sharks in 10-foot tanks to larval-state minnows in 2-ounce jars in a collection housing 1.4 million specimens.

Erickson will be a guest speaker for Career Conversations. The 30- to 45-minute discussions are hosted by the Exploratory Studies program and allow students to connect with people working in a variety of industries to learn about their current occupational and professional experiences.
