Join the School of Public and International Affairs for a talk considering the role of civic tech and human-centered design for reductions in administrative burdens in the social safety net. Civic tech for government applies technology, data and human-centered design to improve policy implementation, often with a social justice focus. The talk will present an example of civic tech in reducing the effects of administrative burdens, specifically mandatory interviews for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. Based on consultation with safety net clients and caseworkers, a civic tech organization implemented a field experiment in Colorado that communicated new interview flexibilities to SNAP applicants. Compared to a control group who received standard mailers, communicating flexible “interview anytime” scheduling options had a higher interview completion rate by 10 percentage points and a higher approval rate by 6-7 percentage points.
