Rebecca Maloy,  the J.W. van Gorkom Professor of Music at the University of Notre Dame, will present "Constructing Sanctity Through Ritual and Sound in the Old Hispanic Rite." Maloy's talk will examine how Christian sainthood was constructed within the Old Hispanic Rite, a distinctive liturgy practiced on the Iberian Peninsula between the seventh and 11th centuries. It will engage the sensory experience of liturgical ritual as a key to Iberian saintly devotion. Each saint was vividly encountered through a rich multisensory experience in which congregants interacted with the saint through direct speech and dialogue. Through sound, the Iberian saints' liturgies articulate the values encapsulated by their dedicatees, revealing how they were meant to shape Christian souls, individually and collectively.

Malloy's talk is part of the Religious Studies Colloquium Series by the Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies.
