The Global Film Series will host a screening of Waves, a remarkable Czech film that received an Oscar nomination in 2025 in the best foreign film category. The film transports viewers to the experiences of Czech students during the tumultuous Prague Spring and the harrowing invasion of Czechoslovakia by the Red Army in August 1968.

“Led by its stellar ensemble, Waves makes for a fleet-footed period drama, the kind whose straightforward narrative is heightened by its stylistic and narrative confidence,”  according to Variety. 

NC State faculty member Paul Isom will give a short presentation on the historical context of the film and its characters before the screening.

The film is in Czech with English subtitles and has a runtime of more than two hours.

The Global Film Series is a partnership between NC State University Libraries and NC State Global. Waves is screened with support from the NC State European Center in Prague.
