It can be difficult to talk about climate change. Through the use of fictional scenarios, games help us explore and reflect on the challenging and sometimes frightening problems we face. In this series, we will livestream gameplay and discuss how climate change games help us understand and grapple with the diverse and interrelated problems resulting from rapid global change.

Our oceans are under threat from climate change, overfishing and pollution. Inspired by the BBC series Blue Planet II, Beyond Blue takes players into the near future, where they explore the mysteries of our ocean through the eyes of Mirai, a deep-sea explorer and scientist. The game invites players to imagine what our ocean’s future might be.

During this event, electrical and computer engineering Ph.D. student Selene Schmittling will play Beyond Blue and talk about how this game challenges players to find hope and feel agency amidst a natural environment under pressure. This event will be streamed live from our Twitch page. Anyone can watch the livestream, and if you have a free Twitch account, you can ask questions and comment in the live chat. Recordings of past streams are available on our YouTube page.
