https://www.lib.ncsu.edu/events/hall-of-gifs-2022-day-3Immerse yourself in the weird world of the early web as you enter The Hall of GIFs, which will be on display at the Teaching and Visualization Lab at the James B. Hunt Jr. Library and the Visualization Studio at the DH Hill Jr. Library.
With assistance from the Internet Archive, a team of NC State developers and librarians gathered thousands of animated GIFs from the archives of GeoCities, an early online community that existed from 1994-2009 and allowed users to create a websites for anything and however they wanted. Among the most ubiquitous design elements was the animated GIF, which imbued many GeoCities pages with a frantic (and often comical) dynamism that became a hallmark of early web design. The Hall of GIFs celebrates the creativity and cultural diversity that thrived within these primitive fan and interest websites.
