National Identity, Provenance, and the Global Politics of Restitution
Join the Gregg Museum of Art & Design in a timely, cross-disciplinary conversation about art, provenance, cultural and national identity, and the global politics of restitution. Professor Jelena Subotic is a Distinguished University Professor of Political Science at Georgia State University, specializing in International Relations, cultural heritage, memory politics, and state identity. She is the author of The Art of Status: Looted Treasures and the Global Politics of Restitution (Oxford University Press, 2025). Dr. Sandra van Ginhoven is Head of the Getty Provenance Index, where she spearheaded a significant redesign of the Index making it easier for museums and researchers to use. The revamped Index permits telling deepened stories of museum collections. The conversation is in conjunction with the exhibition Through Our Eyes, In Our Hands: Prioritizing Indigenous Knowledge in Museums on view now at the Gregg Museum. This exhibit centers Native perspectives on museum stewardship, repatriation, and cultural authority.

This program is co-hosted by the Department of Political Science and Department of History.
