Crafting Sanctuaries expands the popular visual memory of the Great Depression by highlighting rarely seen Farm Security Administration images of rural Black southerners and their spatial worlds during the 1930s and 1940s. Williams will share a short overview of the exhibition. A conversation with NC State faculty members Ajamu Dillahunt-Holloway, an assistant professor of African American history and public history, and Nishani Frazier, a professor of history and director of public history, and North Carolina Poet Laureate Jaki Shelton Green will follow the overview.

The exhibition will be on display at the Gregg from Aug. 6, 2026, to Jan. 16, 2027.

John “Lakota John” Locklear is a living representation of the musical cultures of southeastern North Carolina. He is a member of the Lumbee Tribe that combines the blues with the indigenous music of his ancestors. Locklear first picked up the harmonica at age 7, then the guitar. At age 10, intrigued by the sound of the slide guitar, he bought a glass slide, placed it on his pinky finger and has been sliding ever since. Mama Tonya, Papa John and Sister Layla join him to form a proud Lumbee Nation family of talented musicians.

In connection with this event, please visit these Gregg Museum exhibitions: Stories Told by Breath: Native American Voices in North Carolina and A Creek in Carolina: Artworks by Bobby C. Martin. They will be on display through Sept. 26.

A Q&A session will follow McNair's presentation. The program will conclude with a curated walk-through of the exhibition, Community Stories: Sustaining North Carolina Black Heritage.

He is best known for his hand-carved guitar creations, many of which were constructed from the tree used in the 1930 lynching of Oliver Moore.

Following the viewing, Vines' sister, Alice Vines, and the documentary's directors, Andre Robert Lee and Tim Kirkman, will discuss the complicated and painful crossroads between sacred art and history.

After the discussion, Nishani Frazier, director of public history at NC State, will serve as moderator as participants view one of Freeman's most striking works, The Skull Guitar, which is currently on exhibition at the Gregg.
